Because getting habituated and accustomed to mindfulness is difficult. While it is said that getting accustomed and used to mindfulness can be difficult, there are no such things as carrying heavy loads. And there will be no costs involved. Mindfulness is just a method to calm and rest your mind. Even if you are able to maintain your mind continuously and consistently for a short while, the benefits will be beyond the sky and the earth. It will help you in your direction. The students of Kheni Lower Secondary School in Trashi Yangtse are practising mindfulness in the class. Thinley Wangchuk, a teacher (one of the Mindfulness Camp participants) said, they do short mindfulness practice before the start of class, to help them settle their minds. Do you have a mind?

As new student in school, how many of us have heard our teachers teach, we have two eyes, one nose, one mouth, and two ears? One way or the other, we have learned them, in fact, to the extent that we cannot undo them. But, have you ever heard our teachers talk, we have so-called a ‘‘Mind’’? If not, there is something big missing in educating our children. The point here is to recognize the importance of one’s own mind, and teaching body parts as well. After all, knowing we have two eyes does not help in being kind, forget about help. So, it is worthwhile to invest time and energy, in teaching about our own mind and its inborn dignity.

We are delighted to see our camp participants play important roles in recognizing the importance of the mind.

Contemplation in schools

 The educators, who took part in the Winter Mindfulness camp, are implementing mindfulness practices in their respective schools. The sitting meditation and karma yoga practices are initiated in several schools, coinciding with the observation of the Value Orientation Week. We are delighted to share some photos of the children taking part in the practice. We thank all the educators for their unwavering support in assuring the practice to our children.

Mendrelgang Central School in Tsirang district observed value orientation week with 900 students and teacher coordinators. Mr Jamyang Gyeltshen, a camp participant, briefed about karma yoga and its practice in the gathering. Later, the practice was carried out in different classes led by respective teacher coordinators.

Garden

It has been some time without an update on the LME garden as we have been busy with our annual winter mindfulness program. So, the garden has been left to thrive on its own, with some monitoring help from our residence farmer. However, today we are happy to offer a bundle of fresh green spinach to lamas and lopons (teachers) of Chokyi Gyatso Institute (CGI) for their consumption. This is our first winter production of the year. It is indeed a good harvest with 13 bunches, all sold to CGI at a minimal cost.
Besides, a group of our students and teachers planted 80 Kilograms of potato seeds in the garden, a month ago. Now, these seeds have grown into sprouts, green leaves, and branches. We are excited about the progress.

The 5th Winter Mindfulness Camp

 A group of educators, youth, and civil servant from 12 Dzongkhags (districts) completed 8 days of winter Mindfulness camp at Chokyi Gyatso Institute, Dewathang on 31st of December 2018. The 5th camp had 73% of teacher participants from 22 different schools across Bhutan, 12% of civil servants, 3% from Nunnery Institute and 12% of high school and college youth. The camp also saw more female participants with 59% of the total participants.

The mindfulness camp is an annual program of Lhomon Education, (a program of Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative) to introduce the profound tradition of authentic mindfulness techniques to Bhutanese educators, educationist, stakeholder, and others, keeping intact the priceless tradition of Mahayana Buddhism.

The goal for such camp is simply to give everyone a chance to experiment and explore the innate nature of human minds so that we can help our upcoming generation and youth in authentic manners to grow into being a decent human. It is also to recognize that the mind is much more important than anything else and if we don’t control our mind there is no point controlling all the other things. Further, the program is in line with Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche’s vision to recognize our own profound practices of meditation that are authentic, rich, traditional, and progressive.

‘‘Actually, in Bhutan, we have a tradition of many kinds of profound and deep meditation practices such as Shamtha, Vipassana, visualization and dissolution. Even then, we are not aware of our own tradition and heritage. These days, when people from outside teach us mindfulness, there is shock and disbelief, leading people to believe that we need such things. This is similar to us not being able to recognize our own possessions and wealth. Only when the outsiders give us these things to us, which we actually already possess, then it appears like that the outsiders are introducing such a thing.’’ — Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

H. E. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche in its opening video session highlighted that, ‘‘in this materialistic time just to have little interest to look inside, contemplate inside, not getting distracted by outside and really looking inside is very important. It’s worthwhile to spend our time and energy on it.’’

Drubgyud Tenzin Rinpoche, who presided over the camp, remarked on the importance of educators and individuals, in their roles to facilitate the necessary conditions for students to look inward (one’s own mind) and contemplate on it.

The whole program from the start to the conclusion was thought through carefully as contemplation. The path LME presented was straightforward. It involved practice, practice, and more practice. The eight days of mindfulness program was practice-oriented, with 4 hours of sitting and walking sessions every day, interspersed with short talks, breaks, recorded teaching, guided contemplation, noble silence, discipline, offering, stretching, discussions and karma yoga practice (work with positive motivation) on daily basis. As a whole, the camp facilitated more than 40 hours of mindfulness practice sessions and more than 20 hours of teaching sessions for the participants. Even during tea and meal breaks the practice is integrated by encouraging mindful eating, mindful washing, and drinking to connect the practice into daily lives.

Dr. Yang’s field Experience with first batch of LME students

 Those travelling from Trashigang (the far eastern province) to the southern border province Samdrup Jongkhar, the only highway passes through the small hamlet popularly known as Dewathang (the flat area of happiness) which cannot be missed.  It is a familiar place of historic significance and a pleasant reminder for weary travellers that the business hub Samdrup Jongkhar is not too far from this point on.  I did know the small monastery that existed above this settlement but never visited before.  Those days, the only noticeable objects were white prayer flags. From this same bus stop now one can see the magnificent temple surrounded by a cluster of buildings against the lush green hillock—Chokyi Gyatso Institute (CGI).

CGI—I came to know about this monastery being upgraded to the present institute with its unfamiliar curriculum known as The Druk 3020 Curriculum. I discovered it while Goodling for some information on meditation and mind training, one of the pathways for Educating for Gross National Happiness (GNH).  Out of curiosity, I started reading this curriculum.  It gave me not only the information I was seeking but also some profound thoughts and inspiration about holistic education, the theme I was working on for my doctoral dissertation.  In fact, this changed the course of my dissertation proposal.  I decided to trace the curriculum to its founding principles and place—where it is being implemented, and that is how I landed at CGI.

I arrived at CGI on Sunday, June 15, 2013, around 3:30 pm.  Dawa the new curriculum teacher received me and ushered me to the guest house.  After organizing my things and taking a shower, I came out to get a better view of the institute campus.  The first thing that captivated my attention was the sight of the main temple construction in its splendid architecture.  The final details are not fully done as yet, still, its unique feature such as the four Victory Banners on the second floor top corners stand prominent and auspicious.  As I circumambulated below, it gave me a sense of being blessed.  A sense of spiritual energy was around, and I experienced peace and tranquillity that prevails.  As I walked a little further down I couldn’t help but stop and admire the panoramic view across overlooking Dewathang.  Those settlements along the highway looked much different from above, stretching beside the Flat Space of Happiness (Dewathang) into the distant hills. After standing spellbound for a while I called it for the day.

The next day I joined Dawa to observe his class.  After he introduced me, the class began by reciting the Heart Sutra.  This was my first time hearing the Heart Sutra being recited in English—quite unusual but impressive.  With much stress on some specific words, most read aloud and all seemed excited reciting in English.  This was followed by a few minutes of meditation.  Meditation is, in fact, one of the main focuses of my study, and sure enough, I started paying full attention to see what goes on in a meditation session.  I was particularly interested to see meditation in relation to classroom teaching and learning, in terms of focused attention, wakefulness, information analysis and retention, and the like which meditation is acclaimed for.  To be able to see such outcomes, intense interactions will be carried out in teaching the next unit, Air and Space. What follows are my prior observations over the first couple of weeks:

Eating with Khenpos (Professor or Senior Monk) and Lams (ordained Buddhist teachers) in the commons, I realized after a few days that there was not much variation in what they eat.  Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the main diet most of the time would be rice and potato curry. Not that I didn’t like the taste of the food but there was no balanced diet.  In my casual conversation with Dawa one evening, after supper, I mentioned—it will be nice to have chapatti (Indian flatbread) once in a while for lunch or dinner and for breakfast, fried rice mixed with soaked chana (chickpea) could be served, as it contains high protein. These items just popped up in my mind from my memories of eating in the college commons while studying in India where chana dishes in various forms were often served as part of the balanced diets.  To our surprise the next day, dinner was served with chapatti and the following breakfast with fried rice mixed with soaked chana.

Considering this act from one’s students, I thought it was a significant gesture.  Unless they had given some serious thought to what they had overheard, they wouldn’t have done what they did.  Such kind of transformation is what I wish to see in students from what they hear in classrooms.  Could this be an impact of information analysis—a carryover from meditation exercises—a sense of applied focus?

Likewise, another creative transformation students displayed was after we had a session on Zero Waste management from one of the Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative staffs. To reduce, reuse, and recycle waste was the message.  That session was specifically on how to reuse waste, for which various examples such as how to make a T-Shirt Bag, Umbrella Cushion, and Plastic Broom was demonstrated.

The very next day I saw at least half a dozen of the students carrying the t-shirt bag they made out of their old t-shirts.  They found this idea handy as many of them had old unused t-shirts. The t-shirt bags became handy for carrying plates and cups to the dining and other play items during the breaks.  Some used their t-shirt bags for carrying classroom materials as well.

For one boy, he didn’t just want to reuse the reuse ideas demonstrated in the class.  Instead, he demonstrated his own innovation.  When rest were working on the reuse ideas just demonstrated, he had walked to a heap of broken electrical appliances and picked a part of a broken fan.  I saw only when he was hammering hard with a piece of plank to pin some nails.  He had no proper tool whatsoever.  Next moment he walked into the classroom using it as a Sang Phob (incense burner).  Whenever the classroom got damp and humid, he would bring in the burning Sang (incense) to purify.

My overall impression of CGI was very favourable. While the above examples are simple and anecdotal, for me, they affirmed the importance of creating a learning environment that is inclusive, student-friendly and conducive to creativity and self-expression—one that abides in mutual respect and harmony for students and teachers alike—a true learning community.

Despite advocacy for such ideals, learning is often dominated by fear, wariness, and concern for certain end results, as opposed to learning as a process, fun, and wonder.  For such ideas to take root in a learning community, the foremost prerequisites I believe are mutual respect, trust, care, and concern for each other, particularly between student and teacher.  I am impressed by the display of these qualities in both the conduct and mannerisms of the students and teachers at CGI.  The communal peace and harmony is visible as well as felt.  The young monks are as comfortable as any other senior monk.  For example, it is fun to watch the little ones amongst the seniors in the playground and other communal activities.  Every young one is taken care of by one of the senior monks who is referred to as Ata (big brother).  Ata plays the role of a mentor as well as a friend for the young ones.  CGI could be a living role model for an inclusive and child-friendly school for the rest of Bhutan.

A Decent Human Being - A subject of field trip

A field trip to Palri Buddha Park is in line with Education statement made by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, in facilitating necessary conditions for students to grow into being a decent and an elegant being outwardly and inwardly.
“I want to teach children how to make a fire, and that the source of water does not come from the tap. The aim of this education is to refine ourselves so that we will see the world in a different way so that we can help others, and through helping others make ourselves happy and content. Therefore, what we are learning is not to get jobs, but to refine and make ourselves elegant both outwardly and inwardly… To do that, I would like to create an atmosphere at the school, so that classes can be taught under a big tree, by the bank of a river, or in the paddy field, and so that lessons could involve getting up at three in the morning and watching the colour of the sky and listening to the sound of silence.” Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche
Thus, various activities were incorporated in the trip such as stories, meditation practice, the offering of prayer, smoke offering and karma yoga practice.
As a pre-activity, a story was shared about the importance of refining one’s motivation and aspiration in doing any task. It is about a woman beggar… ‘‘There lived an old woman, who was a beggar. She offered a tiny bowl of butter lamp, which she begged from her community. Her offering accumulated a great deal of merit as she did with pure devotion and positive intention.’’… Hence, through story students were made to reflect the prime importance of one’s own mind and motivation, be it simple offering of feast or time or service.
The Karma yoga practice was included in the trip as an important endeavor to carry out social service. This was to create an opportunity for students to accumulate merit and to learn to be socially responsible individuals. The garbage collection along the pilgrim sites was considered not as a labor-intensive social work, but it was deemed as a contemplative practice that has an environment, health, social and emotional causes. Again here, students were briefed, that their intention is so important in determining the impact of work they do, despite the nature of work. To add-on, another story was narrated about Yogi Milarepa’s first meet with his master Marpa in the field, where Milarepa was assigned to plough the field and that eventually turned into an auspicious meet for his great enlightenment.
We strongly believe that these are necessary conditions we educators must facilitate and help guide students to become a decent human being and contributing member of the society. These contemplation practices of cherishing the importance of MIND are incorporated in almost all LME activities, to nurture young people to be kind, compassionate and helpful beings.





To Experience Inexperience


How do we facilitate more interconnected, actively involved, and lifelong learning opportunities for students? 
One such opportunity is to take a field study tour. The tour has to offer wide ranges of experiences that are often memorable, fun and remain intact in one's memory. LME students and teachers took a field visit to Palri Buddha Park, Mukazor, Wamrong to learn about the Twelve Great Deeds of the Buddha. The trip is to facilitate learning through various experiences such as travel, explore, listen, participate, observe and interact. It is also to help develop the values, knowledge, competencies, and practical life skills that will enable them to live full and satisfying lives and to become contributing members of society.

What do we mean by a simple offering and its choice?
It means offering what you eat at home, what you grow in your garden; and what you can effort as simple as a leaf of spinach and a finger of banana.
