Art

Sonam Kalden, one of our students made this amazing art (the Head of the Buddha) using clay and paper. He creatively used bamboo node and culm to create beautiful patterns on it. His creation is used as one of the important costumes in our short film project with our local youth.

Thank you, @Sonam Kalden for your creation!

Embroidery training for local youth

After working on their embroidery for the last ten days, these girls came to display their artwork. As visible, they've tried different designs, shapes, patterns and creations using their basic understanding of stitching.

The best thing that happened with this art is parents encouraging these youths to create designs and patterns in their traditional Rachus (Female scarf).

A Short Film Project

We are excited to engage a group of local youth in our short film project. The film is about a woman named Kisa Gotami, who comes to seek help from the Buddha. The Buddha taught her in a special way, with a single mustard seed.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Look Inside

As we are deeply engaged in designing simple symbols using needles and threads, we managed to sit, meditate and look inside our minds. At the end of the day, we must decide the values we wanted our young people to learn, without denying the skills.

Flower Embriodery

A beautiful piece of art by Sonam Gyelpo. It started with one stitch and ended with thousands of stitches. It is a creation of multi stitching process, perhaps this meticulous process could teach our students, the interdependent reality and illusory nature of their own creation.

If not for every stitch, there won't be a tree, bee, flowers, and grasses that we see in the frame!

Embroidery

Embroidery is a fine art that is rich in the process. As our students pick canvases and needles, they are physically and mentally engaged in a process that is enriching with values, discipline, and achievements. The painstaking steps involved in the process bring students’ attention to focus on the minute details of the design, shapes and patterns that they are working on. Of course, the whole process is time and attention-demanding for our students. Perhaps, such demanding help our students to become more resilient physically, mentally and emotionally.

Paddy

Along the valley, the farmers of Selmothang harvest their last remaining paddy, a yield of their hard work and endurance. We made it to be a part of this final process, to help collect paddy for a humble family.

What we consume, where it comes from and the processes involved with its production are significant chains to identify because through this, we begin to recognize and appreciate that the animals have suffered, people have worked hard, insects have sacrificed their lives, and many more.

Meditation!

Amid a flowing river, dense vegetation, rocks and sands, we tried, to pay attention to our minds. It apparently is only a powerful hope in the midst of uncertainty.

Birding

Bird watching is a great way to get out into nature and to keep in touch with the mystery of the natural world. While we are birding, we get fresh air, exercise and to learn more about the areas we visit. Seeing the wildflowers, trees, shrubs, butterflies, rivers, and other plants that share the birds’ environment, helps us to appreciate how all the living things INTERDEPENDENTLY exist in harmony. This is a great way to teach conservation of animal habitat, trees, animals, plants, water resources, and traditional ecological wisdom in the locality.

Here are some photos of birds from our recent Field Trip to Bhangtar with our students.
Special thanks to Mr Karma Tenzin (Lee Tenzin) for your kind support and help during our entire trip!

Mask Project for students

In the mask-making project, students undertook a rigorous process to craft their ideas using shape, size, design and colour. As a part of the Buddhist art and culture unit, the aim of the project was to augment the students’ creative imaginations, to give them hands-on experiences, and to enhance social interactions, while emphasizing the importance of process-oriented learning.

Great work all the artists!

Deuri River Trip

The Deuri River is an integral diverse system that is home to plants, animals, birds, and butterflies, as well as a natural therapeutic place for humans, that is cautiously fashioned with the reality of interdependence. This neighbouring ecosystem is a pristine bio-network for our students to be engross in various learning experiences to develop a broader understanding of the world around them, as well as their inner world. Thus, this trip is a humble program to promote positive attitudes and sustainable mindful actions towards achieving greater conservation goals.

To all the inhabitants, adjacent to Dewathang and SamdrupJongkhar: A modest plea, next time when you take a trip to Deuri; please assure not to take junk food (Maggie, Koka, fizzy drinks etc) and plastic-packaged food.

Lhabab Duchen

On this very auspicious Lhabab Duchen, let us remember and pay homage to our great teacher, the Shakyamuni Buddha. Today’s occasion is commemorated as the Buddha’s return to the human realm from the realm of the gods, after giving teachings to his mother, who had been reborn there.

Sharing story

"You just need to be patient, a notebook to record, a pair of binoculars, and a field guide for Birdwatching," said Tandin Wangdi, a teacher at Trashi Yangtse Lower Secondary School. Tandin sir is a living example of his teacher's influence on his passion for birdwatching and love of nature, and now he lives to influence his students like Jamba. Jamba's fascination for nature grew when he was 11 years old, in grade four as Tandin sir's student. Today, Jamba who is in grade 8, continues to go birdwatching and explore more about nature. Jamba aspires to be a forest ranger in Bhutan.

Thank you Tandin Wangdi for sharing this inspiring story. We enjoyed listening to your passion, field experiences, and how you spark interest in young people.

Nature Trip to Deuri

Lhomon Education students, teachers, and Chokyi Gyatso Institute - Dewathang lopons went for a Nature Trip to Deuri, a beautiful river system flowing down the base of the Dewathang community. The program was to create opportunities for our students and teachers, to see the interdependent reality of coexistence, between humans, animals, the natural world, and the river system that is around us.

As a part of the program, we did a meditation along the riverbank, collected garbage as a Karma Yoga practice, and ate organic food that was consciously prepared. It was a meat and junk-free program. Through such activities, we wanted to encourage our students to take sustainable mindful actions to achieve greater goals of environmental conservation and to inculcate stewardship towards our nature.
Yes, we had fun swimming and playing in the river. It was one of our goals!
Be responsible to our mother nature!

Community Wakefulness Retreat - One

Much of the problem that we see today in the world is due to mental starvation because we don’t give enough food to our minds. It is important to know that, just as we take care of our physical body, we need to take care of our mind. The mind is one of the most important things we have.

Therefore, to educate about the mind and its importance, Lhomon Education and Chokyi Gyatso Institute - Dewathang are currently organizing a three-day wakefulness retreat for the community people of Dewathang.

Global Tiger Day

What if, the tigers disappeared from the world?
If this is the case, we'd be losing the human symbol that represents our dignity. In Buddhism, the Tiger is a symbol of awareness, kindness and confidence.

Wakefulness Practice for students

We are inspired by Ugyen Thinley sir, one of our past Wakefulness (mindfulness) participants, who recently initiated and organized a wakefulness program for his 370 students (170 boys and 200 girls) at his school, Daga Central School, Dagana from 15th to 16th of July, 2021.
Thinley sir said, "we practiced breathing meditation, walking meditation, and karma yoga in a two-day retreat. The retreat is conducted in four groups since there was a huge number of students."
We truly rejoice sir's effort in creating such a platform for our young people to learn about their minds. Mind indeed is the most important entity. The essence of human development must begin with looking inside and the state of mind.
Thank you once again for such an initiative Ugyen Thinley

Virtual Photography Session

We organized three-day virtual photography training for the teachers and monks.
The participants have learned that photography is a medium/a tool to express ideas, situations, messages, and emotions. To create these expressions, photographers must be artists.

During this training, we have undeniably learned that photography is an art, and one must master it through practice, practice and practice.
Thank you Karan Bit Urao for facilitating the training.
